iPads are truly a great choice to buy refurbished – they are sturdy, often used with more care than a smartphone, and their components are typically highly durable.
At iRefurbished, we currently offer two iPad generations, which are the iPad 2019 (or the 7th generation), and the iPad 2020 (i.e. 8th generation). These models perfectly hit the sweet spot between efficiency and affordability. Additionally, we also offer both generation with WiFi-only or, alternatively, with WiFi and 4G support.
In this article, we will first discuss some of the most important questions you need to ask yourself before buying an iPad, and then also discuss why these models are the most popular to buy refurbished.
iPad Buying FAQs
When is an iPad model too old to buy?
Just like with any technical device, you should always consider how old an iPad is that you are considering. This doesn’t refer to the actual age of a specific device, but rather the age of the iPad generation. On the one hand, a device that’s too old will simply feel slow compared to more modern devices. But even more importantly, if an iPad generation becomes too old, Apple will not issue new software updates for it.
Typically, each iPad generation gets about 5-6 years of support. After support has faded, the iPad can still be used of course – you may encounter problems with certain apps within a few years of software support elapsing.
Most buyers will want to hit the sweet spot of buying an older generation, which have much more attractive pricing, and getting a device that will still be good to use for years on end. This is the case with both the iPad 2019 and the iPad 2020.
Should I buy a WiFi Only or a 4G model?
This really depends on how you want to use your iPad. If you travel with your iPad a lot, or if you use it outside your house or office, then a 4G iPad could make sense for you.
In the vast majority of cases, however, regular consumers will be fine with the WiFi only model. Remember that you can still always use your phone to give the iPad a mobile hotspot in case you need internet access while away from home.
What is the difference between iPad, iPad Mini, iPad Air, and iPad Pro?
The standard iPad represents the base line of all the different iPad versions. It is the most affordable by far, and offer balanced performance for a great price.
At roughly 20% smaller than the regular iPad, the iPad mini also offers a noticeable step up in computing power. Additionally it has a better display, screen resolution, and front camera, as well as premium features such as WiFi 6e and 5G (latest generations). It is also more than 70% more expensive than the standard iPad.
At roughly double the price vs. the standard iPad, the iPad Air boasts a similar size display with massively enhanced performance. The iPad Air is also slimmer than both the regular and mini models. It’s display resolution, however, is closer to the regular iPad than the iPad Mini.
Last but not least, the iPad Pro represents the flagship tablet of Apple. It has a roughly 30% larger screen with the highest resolution, more storage space, much better cameras, significantly improved brightness, and many other premium features. It does, however, come with triple the standard iPad’s price tag.
Refurbished iPad Buyer’s Guide for 2024
Why you should buy the iPad 2019 / 7th Generation
The iPad 2019 is the ultimate entry model for refurbished iPads in 2024. It comes with an excellent CPU capable of providing a smooth office and social media use experience. It will still run many games smoothly, although hardcore gamers should probably consider the iPad 2020 if this is a priority for them.
Other than that, there aren’t really any major differences compared to the following generation – it simply looks and feels great. Currently, the iPad 2019 model still has still about 3-4 years of use before it’s slowly starting to look outdated.
Why you should buy the iPad 2020 / 8th generation
As already hinted, the main reason to buy the iPad 2020 is its enhanced CPU chip. This provides a much better gaming and augment reality experience, for example. Additionally, one might also argue that the iPad 2020 is more future proof compared to the 2019 version, as its enhanced CPU will likely be able to handle new apps for years to come. As of 2024, the iPad 2020 should be good to use for at least another 4-5 years.
